How do electronic cigarettes work?
Most e-cigs contain a small battery which provides the energy for it to work. E-cigarettes contain liquid nicotine in a small cartridge. Many e-cigs are disposable, so they only work for one “use”. However, a number of newer and more advanced systems now offer the ability to change cartridges and are therefore reusable.
When the cartridge contacts what’s known as an atomizer’s bridge, the nicotine is absorbed into the unit’s steel mesh reservoir where it waits for you to react with it (by inhaling).
After inhaling, the liquid is pulled from the reservoir and into the ceramic pot of the e-cig. The liquid is then heated by a coil until it becomes vapour. The vapour is then drawn out by the user and inhaled. This reaction all takes place reasonably quickly.
Whilst the vapour does not normally smell, a number of new e-cigs are offering various odours or flavours. Normally, a light will come on at the end of a cigarette to show it is in use. Some newer e-cigs actually look like a cigarette and contain a light that replicates a burning “cherry”.
Although many e-cigs are “one use”, they actually last a long time, and contain they nicotine of up to 40 traditional cigarettes.
What are the benefits of e-cigarettes?
Whilst being cheaper than traditional cigarettes, e-cigs main benefits are that they are healthier than smoking normally. Although they do contain nicotine (which helps aid a smoother withdrawal for those who are addicted), they have far fewer other chemicals when compared to normal cigarettes. This means they have a number of potential benefits to your health when compared to traditional smoking.
Users of e-cigarettes have reported noticing a number of improvements in their general health, including coughing less, improved energy levels, and fewer phlegm build-ups. Users have also claimed that they feel less stressed and are in a better mood thanks to e-cigarettes. Some of the potential upsides for e-cigs are still unclear, but it’s obvious to many that they’re better for you than “proper” tobacco smokes.
Another benefit of e-cigarettes is that you can continue to enjoy the social aspect of “smoking” without actually doing so. You wont smell of smoke and you can do it indoors, too.
