When you own a home, you should always take a proactive approach and make sure to prevent issues. When doing this, you can save a lot of money and time in the long run. One way to prevent disasters is to take care of any current and potential plumbing issues.
With this in mind, here are five plumbing tips for the spring.
Check toilet for leaks:
Over the years, your toilet may leak and you may have no idea it happened. To catch this costly and annoying problem, you should add a few drops of food coloring to your toilet tank. Then, you should return in 30 minutes to check your toilet. If you see food coloring in the bowl, your toilet is leaking. If not, you are good to go. Of course, to check for other leaks, you can simply look at the ground and areas around the toilet. If you see anything wet, you will have a problem on your hands. At this point, you should call a plumber who can look at the issue a little more.
Now, without a doubt, you must inspect your appliances and make sure they are in great shape. One thing you must check is the hose to your washer. When it has been a long time since you last replaced it, you will probably want to invest your money in a new one. Otherwise, in due time, you will see the hose explode, and you will have a mess on your hands. Since this is such a cheap item, you should have no problem in replacing it, even if it still has some time left. Remember, with your appliances, you can prevent most issues with a quick inspection.
Check all drains:
With working drains, you can avoid most flooding issues. Sadly, over time, drains will get backed up and clogged with hair and other items. To inspect these thoroughly, you should run the water and make sure it goes down the drain quickly. If this is not the case, you can use a plunger to clear the drain. At the same time, while looking at drains, you should also make sure you have strainers. With strainers, you can avoid problems in the first place as you can prevent large items from clogging the drains.
Inspect for leaks:
When you have a leaky faucet, you will literally waste money and see it go down the drain. Now, often, a person will have a leaky faucet and hardly notice it. But, this is not wise as you will waste a lot of money if you waste water all the time. To fix this, you must go under the sink and look at your options. Often, it is a simple as tightening a bolt. Other times, you will have to add a washer. Either way, with a quick fix, you can fix the issue and save money on your water bills.
Clean mineral deposits:
Over time, you can see mineral deposits add up and cause problems. To prevent this, you should unscrew the faucet heads and soak them in vinegar for a few hours. With this, water will come out correctly. If you can’t get rid of the problem in a couple of hours, you can soak the faucet heads over night. Either way, with this, you can fix the problem with little effort.
If you have a proactive approach towards your plumbing, you can save time and money in the short and long run. Otherwise, if you ignore the issues and do not work hard, you will see things break or function improperly.
