There are some good points to explain sudden drop in PageRank of Mashable. But can it be error from Google because other than the homepage all other pages are showing page rank 6.

In a recently published study of 5,000 keywords (50,000 top webpages) on Google, 64% were internal web pages on websites with HomePage PageRank of at least 4 and 30% were the HomePage of the website.(“Domain Authority: The Top Two Factors On Google: A Study of 50,000 Webpages in 5 Countries”). High HomePage PageRank does not guarantee top positioning which also depends on relevancy. However, if a website has low HomePage PageRank, IMHO, it would be virtually impossible to compete with an internal page against websites with high HomePage PageRank. No program is required to check this out – just a spread sheet).

This WAS GOOD READ. I really appreciate the historical references to the Page Rank conundrum because it makes your whole point clear.

My site (vizfact dot com) went from a pr4 to pr3 and I will say this, while it may not be important anymore, its still prestigious and it feels good to have a high page rank.
